Megaloot

A great idea about loot management wearing a half-finished roguelike.

Megaloot hooked me in the first ten minutes with one idea: inventory management is the game. Every fight puts your loot grid right next to the action. Drag a sword into the wrong slot and it does nothing. Drag it next to the right ring and you're one-shotting things that shouldn't die that fast. Turning inventory management into the fun part is a rare trick, and for a while, Megaloot pulls it off.

The run ends, and you look at what you're bringing into the next one. Nothing. Meta-progression barely exists in a genre built around it, so every run starts from the same blank slate no matter how well the last one went. Half the passive skill trees have branches that are worse than others, and shops keep selling starter-tier junk at a stage where it should have aged out. Each problem is small on its own. Stacked together, they're why I logged twelve hours and moved on instead of sticking around for ninety.

Steam agreed with me. Megaloot launched to a 90 percent "Very Positive" rating and thousands of players on day one. Two years later, it sits at 63 percent, Mixed, and recent reviews haven't moved off that number. In a Steam forum thread, a player asked the developer if the early reviews were bought. The dev said no. A content creator tied to the publisher got accused of steering people away from posting negative ones. Take that however you want, I care less about who said what in a comment section than about this: a full-price 1.0 release shipped with less content than the hype promised, and the community's opinion cooled at the same rate the hype did.

Megaloot is a good idea wearing a half-finished game. The core loop is worth your nine dollars for a weekend. Don't expect it to hold your attention past that, and don't expect the studio to have fixed what's wrong with it by the time you get there.
