Chantelise: A Tale of Two Sisters, originally a 2006 Japanese doujin release from EasyGameStation, follows two sisters, one cursed into fairy form, hacking through dungeons together while a gem-based magic system does most of the tactical heavy lifting. Carpe Fulgur, the team behind Recettear's English release, brought it to PC in 2011.
The writing carries most of the game's actual charm: sharp, funny localization that holds up well against much bigger-budget releases from the same era. Hand-drawn 2D sprites moving through 3D environments still give it real visual character, the score earns its own praise, and the gem system, six equipped at once, forces genuine tactical choices about what to bring into a fight. Time trials and bonus dungeons give completionists somewhere to keep going after the credits.
The healing-item design is the clearest real flaw: potions drop randomly off enemies and get consumed the instant they're picked up, with no inventory to save one for later, a decision more than one contemporary reviewer singled out on its own. Dungeon crawling turns grindy and repetitive well before the story wraps up, mixing 2D sprites into 3D space makes platforming imprecise enough to cause cheap deaths, and the difficulty runs punishing enough to push away anyone not already looking for a real fight. The 2006 budget shows plainly in the presentation.
Metacritic holds it at a mixed 62 from only 13 critics, no real consensus forming in either direction, while Steam sits at 76 percent Mostly Positive across roughly 759 reviews, too small and old a player base for a separate recent-review score to exist.
Buy it, especially on sale. The writing and the magic system carry real charm, but go in ready for a genuine grind and a healing system that fights you almost as much as the enemies do.
